  • Osprey for andym

I mentioned in the current salon (What I did this summer) that I hadn't spotted any Osprey on my recent trip to Scotland. I did visit Loch Garten but sadly the male Osprey had disappeared some weeks before and with him not bringing any food the chicks had died and the female had abandoned the nest. So I've still not seen them in my home country but I was lucky enough to see them twice in Australia last year

First sighting was at Broome in North Australia

And about a week later we took a boat trip up the river Kalgan from Albany in West Australia.

    A few seconds later

And finally a bird on its stack

Oh you lucky, lucky man, Rab.

They do come down to Pagham. I have seen them at a distance.
But never been anywhere near enough to photograph them.

      Loved seeing these. Great set.

Thank you both. I was very fortunate I think to see these magnificent birds in fact that whole day on the Kalgan river was amazing. If any of you get the chance to visit South West Australia make sue you take a boat trip up the Kalgan from Albany.

        Also saw fish eagles there...

Darters known locally as Snake birds because of the way they swim with just the head and neck out of the water

        and the prolific Australian Pelican

Fish Eagle ? I could go right off you, Rab !

Super photos. I would love to have seen these.

The Darter, or Snake Bird is similar to our Cormorant. I would think that that too has not got fully waterproof feathers. Hence they float under water.

Pelicans fly well, but look unbalanced. They are large birds. I have photos of them from Mykonos. Very tame.
