  • Crystal Sunset

I thought I would put these attempts at a dof shots of a crystal with sunset as background up for critique. Its the first time I have tried anything like this. It was taken from the window cill of my second floor flat in London. I will also attach one of the actual sunset taken through a part of the window that I can open i.e. not through glass. There are a few more of the same sunset at different stages in my gallery.

I can see why you like the first one - the fiery glow within the crystal is very appealing. It would have been even better with some additional depth of field to keep the outline of the crystal sharper.

The middle two aren't so good - there is some halo effect along the sharper edges which suggests over-processing.

I really love the sky in the last one - beautiful

Love the sunset, In my opinion the crystal images don't grab the attention as they should, but I do admire the thought processes that led you to make the experiment, seeing an image/end result in your mind is only half the task, but a very important half, createing it is the difficult bit. I feel you have come close to succeeding in the first image.

Thanks for the comments - yes I think there may be an issue with the sharpess (or lack thereof) of the crystal - I should have mounted the camera on a tripod and closed the aperture down more.

I can notice the halo on the third one and will check when I get home what the original was like - I didn't realise you could do this by over processing - I used levels and curves (i.e. light enhancement) in elements if my memory serves certainly I did do quite a lot of processing on the third so Ian your analysis is probably correct.
