I'm not really sure what I wanted from this shot, I ended up gathering a few items I had to hand, using a desk lamp to light from behind and failing light from a window.

Taken with a 13mm ext tube and the 18 - 55 kit lens.

If anyone can offer and suggestions when working with colour and converting to B&W I'm all ears.

I used the channel mixer set to mono and kept the total values to around 100 % for the shot.

Strange setup this. :-)
The focused earphone looks fine with half of it in shadow but the whole thing isn't saying anything to me.

Thats a pretty recognised method Stu, but don't be afraid to play with the %ages to get a better result. With regard to the picture, I think I would have been inclined to focus on the near earpiece and let the other go out of focus.

Pops I know what you mean by strange setup

Stephen I have tried another (sorry ) with the front ear piece in focus, again converted to B&W then the red channel in levels pushed up a touch.

It does seem to work better with the focus this way round I think.

I still have no real idea of why I'm taking shots of these, apart from practice with the ext tubes and PS.
All these weeks of being house bound are sending me a little mad maybe

Yes I think this does work much better Stu, the light on that fine mesh of the earpiece is great and focus on that point in spot on. I don't think it matters why you take these things, just treat it as an enjoyable exercise, a learning curve.
