  • Spring evening on Ullswater

Taken as the evening sun was beginning to fade behind the hills. A stunning setting - hope I've done it justice. All comments appreciated.

Magical capture. I love the light and reflections. Sharpness is good too. Some might say that placing the log central to the composition is "wrong" but like it.

In my opinion you have produced an excellent photograph - the tones and contrast lift it from the ordinary. You were lucky with the light but it is you who have captured it.

Hi Grangie, congrats on your first photo posted here. And what a great one to start with. You have an almost classic composition, the position of the log doesn't bother me but I can see that some might think it too central. Of course the evening light on the hills is great, and helps to make some superb reflections in the lake. This is definately one for the wall

Thanks for the positive comments everyone. Josh, I appreciate your comments about the position of the log. I did take several shots and in some the log was was more to the right, but in the end it was this picture which I felt captured the moment. Thanks for the encouragement Blithe - I was very lucky with the light - five minutes later the whole scene had changed as the sun was setting very quickly. Thanks Stephen for your technical advice in helping me get my first picture up here. Hopefully the first of many.

A lovely scene and well photographed. Only nit pic I would have is the lack of any detail in the circular log end in the middle.
What I really do like is the reflection in the water of the hill on the left combined with the shadow of what I assume is another hill.

Thanks for the comment Tom. Much appreciated. I agree with your comment on lack of detail. A couple of other shots I took at the site have more detail of the log, but the overall effect of the composition was not as satisfying.

                Beautiful picture.

For me it has a kind of timeless quality. Perhaps I've been looking at screens too long but at first glance I thought the central log was a mermaid!

                    I agree Vernon.

Beautiful image, I never noticed the log they looked like abstract sculptures to me. I love it. Lighting and reflections suit my mind - so peaceful.

                      Hi Grangie,
I also love the colour and lighting in this shot. The image has an ethereal feel that wouldn't look out of place in one of the "Myst" games.

                      Great stuff !
