  • Rock Wall Silouette

Taken this evening on a trip up to Buckstones Edge with Thomas hoping to get a nice sunset, the sun did not set where we wanted it to and there was a loose bull in the field where we were taken pictures
Im glad to say Im getting the passion back now, everything has settled down at home and Emily is sleeping through, it makes sooooooooooo much diference

    Re: Rock Wall Silouette

I'm surprised no one has made a comment on this one. Personally I rather like it. The massive dark shape of the rock against the bright orange colour of the sky with the sun just peeping through appeals to me. I probably would have preferred to see a little detail in the rock, though I imagine this may have been difficult to achieve, without some exposure blending. I also would have probably included more of the sky and less of the silhouetted rocks. On a technical note there is a slight halo effect along the edge of the rock and I wonder if its been over sharpened. Overall though its a great graphical shape and the sort of image I could see being made into a large canvas for the wall.

      This appeals to me too.

I agree with Stephen that the bottom could be shortened and the top lengthened by the same amout.

Of course, if you did this, it may not be quite so dynamic. It's a case of trying it.

        Re: Rock Wall Silouette

I'm not too sure about seeing more of the sky, as Stephen mentioned, mainly because it is a bit blank. Had there been an interesting cloud formation, or any clouds at all maybe then more sky would benefit.
But I would still remove some from the bottom as it is a bit too much of a black blank but as I imagine how this might look, I am having second thoughts about the sky so maybe a bit more sky with the crop from the bottom could be the job.
One way or the other, a nice evening feeling comes across from this image as it is presented here.

          Re: Rock Wall Silouette

I've been dithering over making a comment because what I have in mind is possibly a bit OTT but here goes anyway.

The picture has a sort of "Armageddon" feel to it - reminded me of certain scenes from the likes of 'Empire of the Sun' or the sort of image that comes to mind reading Cormac McCarthy's book 'The Road'. That, in turn, had me reaching for Streisand's version of "The Morning After".

So how about going back there with those thoughts in mind and maybe aiming for capturing more through the chinks, maybe a similar sky - maybe something yet even more dramatic than you have already?

Here's a link to Barbra Streisand's version of The Morning After - the song goes the sky is black, ground is red but that's unimportant in the overall context imo. Ok - call me a nutter. It's just the way my mind happens to work.

Well I did warn you. I really can't help it.

Can't you feel it and see it though? Doesn't the music add to the dramatic effect and inspiration?

I mean - isn't that what film making is all about. Music and imagery creating the overall impact. It's just that I see images and often 'hear' them in my head.

                  Re: Rock Wall Silouette

Thanks guys and gals, its really entertaining reading your comments, nutters and all
Ive not been in the zone for a long time and Im really looking to get back on form.
I do honestly take everything on board even though sometimes it seems otherwise.
This image was pretty much the best of a failed sunset outing, the important thing is that I can be bothered again and you don't always come back with the fruit
I saw the sun squinting through the rocks, and took the shot. Its that instinct that warms you up inside and excites you for the results on the monitor back at home.
This sort of abstract shot appeals to me but never crossed my mind it might look good on a large canvas, thanks Stephen.
I will have another play with the shot as its different, Im not sure less black would be good as then it would be too even, the sky is only as good as it was without really going to town shopping a sky in, and this I cant say i agree with even if I did no how to do it This shot was pretty much off the cam, no cropping, although I do have the raw
                  cheers
