I ran into a curious issue today that I hadn't seen before. I don't know if it's been present in previous versions of Windows (maybe I just didn't have a monitor good enough to notice!).
Anyway, I've profiled my Dell U2412M monitor and have applied the correct profile in the right places. 99% of the time, everything is fine. The one place it isn't fine is Windows Photo Viewer - this is the preview that Windows uses when you double-click an image (such as a JPG).
The odd thing is that the thumbnail looks to be correct, and Windows displays the image correctly if you use it for a desktop background. The only place it appears to be wrong is the Photo Viewer - as though it's ignoring the ICC profiles. I'm not technical enough to know why it might be wrong, I just know that the thumbnail looks correct while the preview does not.
If I use a different viewer, such as QuickTime's Picture Viewer (that installed as part of Quicktime, as part of iTunes), then it displays just fine, as it does when working in my graphics software.
I don't know if this is an issue that's plagued previous versions of Windows, but it's very annoying. Does anyone know of a solution? If not, does anyone know of an alternative to the Windows Photo Viewer? I used to have an alternative when using Xara software, but I'm not sure where that is at the moment (or even if it'll work on Windows
