Dye-sub, what's that?
We are all familiar with ink-jet photo printers, but dye-sub technology has been around for just as long and has particular advantages compared to ink-jet. As the colour dyes are sealed in by a clear top layer, there is no exposure to potentially fading oxidation from the air. Dye-sub prints are also splash proof and can be wiped clean.
No dots
Unlike ink-jet printers that form an image from millions of microscopic dots splashed onto the paper as droplets of cyan, magenta and yellow ink, a dye-sublimation or dye-sub printer forms the image by creating continuous tone image layers in cyan, magenta and yellow. This is done by heating the dyes on a super-thin roll of plastic film, using a special thermal print head, onto the print media. HiTi calls this Dye Diffusion Thermal Transfer (D2T2) technology.
Once the full colour image has been formed, a clear top coat layer seals it and with HiTi printers this 'Magic Coating' includes protection from UV light. Without the characteristic grainy quality of ink-jet prints, dye-sub prints are very photo-realistic.
HiTi 630PS features
The HiTi 630PS is a stand alone photo printer equipped with a hand held controller containing a LCD screen for convenient photo preview and editing. It is capable of outputting 300dpi (equivalent to 4800dpi photo ink-jets) 4x6 inch photos with or without a host computer.
Direct printing is acheived through built in memory card reader slots that accept Compact Flash or SmartMedia cards.
Other models in the HiTi range

HiTi has a range of printers starting at under £100 through to professional models. At the big PMA photo trade show in Las Vegas in February, HiTi's 640PS model beat a competitive field of more than 160 entries from 37 companies in the DIMA Awards category for dye-sub printers.
Visit the HiTi UK site for detailed information about their whole line up.
