5573: Jessops Tripod review

Introduction

Jessops TP 323 tripod review

Good Points.

  • Smooth fluid effect pan & tilt good for video
  • Useful carry handle
  • compact, very lightweight

Bad Points

  • Plastic head flexes
  • Head does not adjust fully to 90° miles out !
  • Only really suited for small video camera, small DSLR or compact occasional use
  • Centre column winder

The TP 323 tripod is a full sized lightweight tripod from the Jessops TP range
Ideal all-round general photographic tripod featuring a rather pointless centre column winder control for raising and lowering of the 3-way pan and tilt head, 3 leg sections with leg braces for added stability, but unfortunately these don’t allow for low level shooting.

Included is a small 3-way fluid effect pan head and a small quick release mounting plate.
The head is a video camera style design, with a damped twist lock control arm with degree markings and 2 bubble levels to aid accurate head adjustment if needed.

Each leg section is independently locked using a plastic lever-type leg lock. These were smooth and easy to operate, but the lock nuts don’t tighten enough to lock solidly and proved a little weak in use.
At the base of each leg is a rubberised plastic foot.

No foam rubber supplied on the legs but a useful carry handle is supplied for easy transportation

Conclusions

Overall, the Jessops 323 is a compact lightweight and reasonably well built tripod, but the pan and tilt head is rather poor it is made from plastic and does flex a little and is a long way out in its 90 deg position and locking the tilt can be quite difficult.
The spirit levels are to slow, 2 fast bubbles would be more effective.
Too light for serious DSLR work I wouldn’t feel confident to use it with any more than a light weight DSLR and small zoom, compact or video camera.
For the price I guess it is good value for money as lightweight travel pod or for occasional use.
