SoHo Composites #2 will take place in New York, USA from 15 January – 7 February 2009.
The Photographers’ Gallery continues to celebrate the vibrancy of cosmopolitan cities, as seen through the lens of contemporary photographers, with the second in its series SoHo Composites #2.
In April 2008, The Photographers’ Gallery invited Mike Figgis to begin documenting London’s Soho district in the first of a three-city project entitled SoHo Composites. The second series, SoHo Composites #2 will take place in New York, USA from 15 January – 7 February 2009. Providing a contemporary exhibition space, MILK Gallery in NYC, will collaborate with The Photographers’ Gallery’s to complete the second project in this three-part series.
Well-known for experimenting with the creative process, Figgis will spend three-weeks, beginning on 7 January, intensely photographing locations in and around SoHo, New York. From 15 January the images move into the gallery setting and installation begins at MILK Gallery. The exhibition will constantly expand as Figgis continues to photograph and print until 22 January. Prada joins the collaboration by inviting Figgis to use their SoHo Epicentre as a backdrop to his portraits. Visitors will witness the artistic process first hand in both MILK Gallery and Prada. Curatorial changes and the inclusion of new images, contribute to reveal an evolving portrait of SoHo. Figgis will print his images using an Epson Stylus Pro 3800, enabling his interpretation of this vibrant area will come to life.
This project follows the inaugural SoHo Composites #1 at The Photographers’ Gallery from 8 – 13 April 2008. Inspired by the success of the London project and in working with Figgis, the renowned British filmmaker, writer, composer and photographer, this latest production SoHo Composites #2 will launch in support of and to raise awareness for The Photographers’ Gallery and its activities. For the past thirty-seven years, The Photographers' Gallery has made its home in Soho, London. It is now embarking on a campaign to create a new benchmark and centre for photography in that neighbourhood. Visit the website to find out more: www.photonet.org.uk.
